Susan Jakes is Senior Fellow at Asia Society Policy Institute's Center for China Analysis and the Editor-in-Chief and Managing Director of ChinaFile, the online platform for original reporting and analysis on China whose editorial operations she has led since its launch in 2013. From 2000-2007, she reported on China for Time magazine, first as a reporter and editor based in Hong Kong and then as the magazine’s Beijing Correspondent. She covered a wide range of topics for Time’s international and domestic editions, including student nationalism, human rights, the environment, public health, education, architecture, kung fu, North Korea’s nuclear weapons, and the making of Bhutan’s first feature film. Jakes was awarded the Society of Publishers in Asia’s Young Journalist of the Year Award for her coverage of Chinese youth culture. In 2003, she broke the story of the Chinese government’s cover-up of the SARS epidemic in Beijing, for which she received a Henry Luce Public Service Award. Her writing has appeared in The Atlantic, Foreign Policy, and The Los Angeles Review of Books, among other publications. Jakes speaks Mandarin and holds a B.A. and M.A. from Yale in history. The workshop is blended synchronous/asynchronous with a live session Tuesday, October 14, 2025, 2–4 p.m. via Zoom. Both experienced and new research staff who participate in consent conversations are encouraged to register on I LEARN by Monday, October 13. Participants must complete all of the pre-work on Tufts CTSI I LEARN in order to receive the Zoom link for the live training. While in the live workshop, your active participation in the live role-play activity is required. You will also learn by providing feedback to others and engaging in group discussions. This will ensure that you get the most out of what this training has to offer. Clinical research coordinators, investigators, research fellows, research nurses, and anyone involved in obtaining informed consent are encouraged to attend. This workshop is great for both new staff and as a refresher for more experienced staff.
