The program, developed in collaboration with the prestigious Organization for Tropical Studies, links intensive language or culture learning (at different levels) and homestays with a unique opportunity to experience the wonders of Costa Rica’s rainforests and cloud forests first-hand. Students conduct their own research to study how animals and people are adapting to our changing world. The first half of the program takes place in the capital city, San José; students then move to La Selva Research Station and Monteverde in the second half to conduct field-based research projects. Students must have completed SPN 003 or equivalent prior to participation on the program.

Her first animated feature Rocks In My Pockets premiered at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 2014 where it received a FIPRESCI Prize. The film went on to over 130 international festivals. It opened theatrically in the U.S. through Zeitgeist Films.  Signe is a Guggenheim Fellow and a Fellow in Film for New York Foundation for the Arts. In this lecture, Dr. Vantongeren will review what defines a “critical mineral” and what geologic processes concentrate them into extractable quantities. She will also discuss ongoing research in her group to characterize large deposits of lithium that were formed right here in New England during the uplift of the Appalachian Mountains and the opening of the Atlantic Ocean.

Each conversation will focus on a different topic, helping us share ideas and build community around the intersection of digital technology and our research and teaching. Tisch Library’s Digital Initiatives department has been experimenting with workflows using OpenAI’s Whisper to create captions and transcripts for audio and video materials in Tufts Digital Library. While many A/V items have commercially prepared captions, many of our older items do not, making them less accessible. We will describe our methodology and the benefits and drawbacks to using Whisper, as well as ideas for future improvements. Nicholas (Nick) Homenda is head of digital initiatives at Tisch Library, where he manages digitization and digital repository services. He formerly worked in librarian positions at Indiana University Bloomington and the University of South Carolina. In a prior career, Nick was an orchestral clarinetist. Hayley Curtis is the senior library assistant in digital initiatives at Tisch Library. In addition to working on AI projects, she digitizes historical books and helps manage content in Tufts Digital Library. Before Tufts, Hayley worked in digital projects at the Wolbach Astronomy Library and at the Photographic Glass Plates Collection at Harvard College Observatory.
