But what are the real climate and financial benefits of buying solar power from across the country—and how do we know? In this talk, sustainability director Tina Woolston and physics professor Roger Tobin explore the renewable electricity options available to universities, how energy markets and carbon accounting shape decision-making, and what the science behind solar energy generation reveals about where and how these projects deliver. Together, they’ll unpack the strategy, assumptions, and implications of Tufts’ solar farm agreement—and what it means for institutions striving to meet climate goals.

- Nov 202:00 PMFrom Particle Physics to Innovative Imaging Scanners: Lecture with Fulbright Scholar José María BenllochBuilding: Collaborative Learning and Innovation Complex (CLIC - 574 Boston Avenue) City: Medford, MA 02155 Campus: Medford/Somerville campus Location Details: 574 Boston Ave., room 402 Open to Public: No Primary Audience: Faculty,Postdoctoral Fellows,Staff,Students (Graduate),Students (Postdoctoral),Students (Undergraduate) Event Type: Lecture/Presentation/Seminar Event Subject: Engineering/Technology,Global Engagement Event Sponsor Details: Department of Physics Speaker Name: José María Benlloch Event Contact Name: Christine Hollenhorst Event Contact Email: christine.hollenhorst@tufts.edu Fulbright scholar José María Benlloch will summarize the new technologies in diagnostic imaging that are being developed by the lecturer and his group. The new techniques tend to democratize the use of medical imaging and therapy so that they can be extended to the entire world population, in line with the objectives of the World Health Organization. Low-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), together with post-processing methods based on non-generative artificial intelligence (AI), is making it possible to obtain quality images of the human body using portable equipment with permanent magnets. Such scanners can be used for the diagnosis and screening of numerous diseases at a significantly lower cost than conventional high-field equipment. The advent of new drugs against Alzheimer's might trigger the development of brain positron emission tomography (PET) dedicated equipment for diagnosing and monitoring the disease. Whole-body PET needs to reduce its costs substantially to be used universally. However, its applications are very numerous and relevant in oncology, to predict the efficacy of treatments such as immunotherapy. New X-ray techniques whose principle consists of measuring the small diffraction that X-rays undergo as they pass through the body (and not the absorption currently used in commercial equipment) make it possible to diagnose, for example, certain lung diseases that are not detected by conventional methods. Finally, we have demonstrated the efficacy of photo-acoustics in the detection and follow-up of skin cancer. José María Benlloch is a tenured research scientist at CSIC, "Spanish Scientific Research Council." In 2010, he founded the Institute for Instrumentation in Molecular Imaging (I3M) at the Technical University of Valencia. He has coordinated many EU Projects, including an Advanced Grant and a Synergy grant. He is author of more than 700 articles (H91) and 50 patents. He received the 2008 Prize of the Foundation King Jaime I, "New Technologies" modality. In 2014, he received the Spanish National Research Prize in Engineering "Leonardo Torres Quevedo." He has also been elected member of the European Academy of Sciences in 2018 and the Royal Valencian Academy of Medicine in 2025. He is currently a Fulbright scholar at Yale University.
