- Oct 2112:00 PMUsing Large Language Model Annotations for the Social SciencesBuilding: Cabot Intercultural Center City: Medford, MA 02155 Campus: Medford/Somerville campus Location Details: Cabot 702 Open to Public: Yes Link: https://forms.office.com/r/1DA2DnC1rz Today, social scientists increasingly rely on automated tools—like supervised machine learning and, more recently, large language models (LLMs)—to analyze vast amounts of text. For example, these tools can help classify whether a political speech promotes nationalism or detect misinformation in international news. But there is a catch: even when these automated methods are “highly accurate” (e.g., accuracy is more than 90%), the small share of mistakes can distort the final research findings if we treat the machine-generated outputs as error-free. In this talk, Naoki Egami introduces a framework called design-based supervised learning (DSL) that addresses this problem. DSL combines the power of automated annotation with a modest amount of careful human coding by experts. The method uses a doubly robust strategy, ensuring that even when prediction errors are not random, the overall statistical conclusions remain valid. In sum, DSL lets researchers take advantage of cutting-edge tools like LLMs while still producing reliable evidence for policymaking and social science. Egami illustrates the framework with two examples where both the key outcome and the main explanatory variables come from text data. Naoki Egami is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a faculty affiliate of the Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS) at MIT. Egami specializes in political methodology and developing statistical methods for questions in political science and the social sciences. Specifically, he works on causal inference and machine learning methods.

As the Acting United States National Cyber Director from February to November of 2023, our nation’s highest-ranking leaders looked to her to shape the national cybersecurity policies and strategies that protect our critical infrastructure and make cyberspace safer for the organizations and individuals who depend on its stability and security. Walden, who has also served as assistant general counsel for Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit, is one of the most respected figures in cybersecurity circles, as well as one of the most sought-after thought leaders for organizations seeking to better understand how they can maximize the security of their businesses in a constantly evolving cyber landscape. Today, she is the president of the Paladin Global Institute, which was founded to bring the private capital perspective into technology policy. She also serves on the Boards of Endgame Systems LLC and Woods Academy. At the Office of the National Cyber Director (ONCD), her tenure was marked by the implementation of innovative initiatives that bolstered the nation’s cyber defense capabilities, as well as a refreshingly collaborative approach between the private and public sectors to secure critical technology from increasingly complex cyber threats. Among various roles of influence throughout her career, Walden also served a decade at the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) — most recently at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Between the DHS and ONCD, she was at Microsoft for three years, advising on advancing its cyber practices, promoting responsible innovation and attacking the scourge of ransomware crime.

It is fielding a growing number of more advanced nuclear-capable delivery systems and may be considering changes to how it postures those systems. This shift in China’s nuclear forces has come against the backdrop of a deterioration in U.S.-China relations, raising concerns about the possibility of a crisis or conflict that could escalate to the nuclear level. This presentation draws on open source intelligence, security studies theory, and the history of China's strategic weapons programs to analyze the trajectory of China’s nuclear forces, the drivers potentially shaping that trajectory, and implications for U.S.-China relations.
