From the Iditarod Dogsled Race to Groundhog Day, from rattlesnake hunts to frog jumping contests, and from camel races to butterfly parades, humans across the country use animals to say something about ourselves, our communities, and our history. But why? What value do these animal festivals and their rituals hold, and why, when animals are in distress, do we insist that the show must go on? In her book Forget the Camel: The Madcap World of Animal Festivals and What They Say About Being Human, lawyer and animal advocate Elizabeth MeLampy explores how these spectacles—where animals become both unwitting performers and powerful symbols—illuminate the complex intersection of animal welfare and cultural tradition. During this talk, MeLampy will share stories about the groundhogs, butterflies, rattlesnakes, lobsters, sled dogs, and other creatures she met during her research. She will also discuss how traditions and rituals can reinforce deeply ingrained paradigms for how we treat animals, and how we might move towards a more compassionate future where animals are not deployed as symbols to tell our human stories. Elizabeth MeLampy is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School. She was named an Emerging Scholar Fellow by the Brooks Institute for Animal Rights Law and Policy in 2020 and received an award for her work with Harvard Law’s Animal Law and Policy Program in 2021. She clerked for judges in the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and the Federal District Court in Arizona, and litigated with the Natural Resources Defense Council. She is currently teaching an Animal Law elective at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University through the M.S. in Animals and Public Policy program. Susan Jakes is Senior Fellow at Asia Society Policy Institute's Center for China Analysis and the Editor-in-Chief and Managing Director of ChinaFile, the online platform for original reporting and analysis on China whose editorial operations she has led since its launch in 2013. From 2000-2007, she reported on China for Time magazine, first as a reporter and editor based in Hong Kong and then as the magazine’s Beijing Correspondent. She covered a wide range of topics for Time’s international and domestic editions, including student nationalism, human rights, the environment, public health, education, architecture, kung fu, North Korea’s nuclear weapons, and the making of Bhutan’s first feature film. Jakes was awarded the Society of Publishers in Asia’s Young Journalist of the Year Award for her coverage of Chinese youth culture. In 2003, she broke the story of the Chinese government’s cover-up of the SARS epidemic in Beijing, for which she received a Henry Luce Public Service Award. Her writing has appeared in The Atlantic, Foreign Policy, and The Los Angeles Review of Books, among other publications. Jakes speaks Mandarin and holds a B.A. and M.A. from Yale in history. India has the world’s largest TB epidemic, accounting for one-quarter of TB incidence and one-third of TB deaths globally. Given that TB is highly curable in the vast majority of cases, improving implementation of health services in resource-constrained settings is critical for bending the curve to accelerate TB elimination. This talk will focus on the World Health Organization SORT IT model of capacity building in operational research in low- and middle-income countries. Using case studies, this talk will highlight the role of operational research in shaping health care delivery and provide examples of how this research approach transformed key policies within India’s National TB Elimination Programme. Jaya Prasad Tripathy is an associate professor at the Department of Community Medicine, All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Nagpur, India. He serves as a clinician at the Fever, Preventative, and Immunization Clinic; a manager in charge at a primary health center providing service for approximately 70,000 people; and a researcher and teacher for MD, MPH, and PhD courses. He previously worked as a senior operational research fellow with the International Union Against TB and Lung Disease (the Union), where he mentored operational research projects in TB, HIV, and malaria in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ethiopia, Myanmar, and Nepal, in collaboration with their national programs. He is a senior mentor for the SORT IT training program within the World Health Organization Special Training Program for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases. He has over 200 peer-reviewed articles and has managed projects funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research, Department for International Development, and United States Agency for International Development. He is currently a visiting fellow with the Department Public Health and Community Medicine at the Tufts University School of Medicine for the 2025–2026 academic year.
