Meet Dr. Ann Wolbert Burgess, D.N.Sc., APRN, FAAN, the renowned forensic nurse who transformed the way the FBI profiles and catches serial killers and inspired the Hulu documentary “Mastermind: To Think Like a Killer” and the popular Netflix series, “Mindhunter.” An internationally recognized pioneer in the assessment and treatment of victims of trauma and abuse, Burgess co-founded one of the first hospital-based crisis counseling programs at Boston City Hospital. Her work led to the groundbreaking study of young victims and the impact of trauma on their growth and development, their families and communities. Burgess’ expertise led to a collaboration with the FBI’s newly created Behavioral Sciences Unit to study violent serial offenders, and the links between child abuse, juvenile delinquency, and subsequent perpetration. Her book, A Killer by Design: Murderers, Mindhunters, and My Quest to Decipher the Criminal Mind, chronicles this work. Dr. Burgess will share old cases with the audience during her talk. The recipient of many honors and awards, Burgess’ legacy continues today in the study of elder abuse in nursing homes, cyberstalking, and Internet sex crimes. She is Professor of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing at Boston College Connell School of Nursing, where she teaches courses in Victimology, Forensic Science, Forensic Mental Health, Case Studies in Forensics and Forensic Science Lab. 8th Annual Black Maternal Health Conference
Friday, April 4th - 5th, 2025
Centering the Role of Fathers in Addressing Maternal Health Inequities
Every year, BMHC brings Black birthers and their families, birthworkers, health experts, researchers, students, community members, and change agents to learn about the current work to improve the Black maternal health crisis in the United States. There is an urgency to disrupt the status quo in maternal health. We seek to raise awareness, inspire activism, and encourage community building. Participants leave educated, inspired, and equipped to continue the fight for Black maternal health equity.
The goal of the Annual Conference is to: Identify how health professionals can improve the Black maternal health experience.? Understand the role that bias and systemic racism play in causing adverse maternal health outcomes for Black birthing people in the U.S.
Facilitate conversations between health professionals and the community at large on ways to become advocates and improve Black maternal healthcare.
