This two-part program highly empowers participants to support inclusion and belonging efforts for the Jewish community. During the initial virtual session, we'll explore who Jews are, what antisemitism is, and how it operates. During the subsequent in-person session, we'll unpack how anti-Jewish harm shows up in the current political climate, including inside discourse around Israel & Palestine. Through small group discussion, pair shares, and Q&A there is ample time for unpacking difficult questions and challenging scenarios. Participants leave with a greater understanding of the Jewish community’s identities, lived experiences, and traumas, better prepared to be allies to the Jewish community, and how antisemitism ultimately undermines democratic, pluralistic societies and institutions

- Apr 712:00 PMGranoff Music Center Colloquium: "Listening to the Nakba: Palestine and the Crisis of Response" - David McDonald (Indiana University Bloomington)Building: Perry and Marty Granoff Music Center City: Medford, MA 02155 Room: Varis Lecture Hall Campus: Medford/Somerville campus Wheelchair Accessible: Yes Open to Public: Yes Event Contact Name: Anna Griffis Event Contact Email: anna.griffis@tufts.edu Event Contact Phone: 6176272253 For Palestinians the nakba, or catastrophe, is a profound concept that describes the events of 1948, when the majority of the world's Palestinians were forced into exile, as well as ongoing experiences of settler-colonial dispossession and erasure. As both historical event and contemporary discourse, the nakba not only connects Palestinians across time and space, it captures the underlying logic that legitimizes myriad forms of violence, death, and political repression currently facing Palestinians (and their allies) around the world. Drawing from recent literature in indigenous sound studies, in this talk I argue that the nakba offers an essential point of contact for hearing Palestinian experience and for refusing colonial listening practices. I propose that the current Palestinian crisis reverberates across sensory fields, and that by critically attending to the ways in which Palestinians are heard, artists, activists, and academics are better prepared to respond to challenges of the contemporary world. David A. McDonald is Associate Professor of Folklore and Ethnomusicology at Indiana University. Since 2002, he has worked closely with Palestinian communities in Israel, Jordan, the West Bank, Gaza, and North America.Trained in ethnomusicology, he has published widely on Palestinian music, focusing specifically on the dynamics of trauma, violence, and exile. Dr. McDonald is the author and co-editor of five books, including My Voice is My Weapon (Duke 2013); Palestinian Music and Song (IU Press 2013); At the Crossroads of Music and Social Justice (IU Press 2022); Festival Activism (IU Press 2025); and Holy Land Five: Palestinian Charity in the US “War on Terror” (forthcoming 2026).His research has been recognized by the American Folklore Society (2014 Chicago Prize) and the Society for Ethnomusicology (2014 Japan Kunst Prize, 2023 Ellen Koskoff Prize, and 2023 Bruno Nettl Prize) for its commitment to participatory activist research methodologies and the pursuit of social justice through music.
