In this lecture, Dr. Vantongeren will review what defines a “critical mineral” and what geologic processes concentrate them into extractable quantities. She will also discuss ongoing research in her group to characterize large deposits of lithium that were formed right here in New England during the uplift of the Appalachian Mountains and the opening of the Atlantic Ocean.
