Gregor and White Receive ITA Regional Coaching Awards

MEDFORD - Head coach Karl Gregor (pictured, left) and assistant coach Nick White (pictured, right), who led the 2021-22 Tufts University men's tennis team to its first-ever NCAA "Final Four" in the spring, were recognized with regional coaching awards announced by the the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) today.

The Wilson ITA Coach of the Year for the Northeast went to Gregor, while White was named the Northeast's ITA Assistant Coach of the Year. Gregor is in his eighth year leading the Jumbos, while White joined the staff as an assistant in 2019. Together they directed the team though the most successful season in program history this year.

Tufts played to a 20-3 overall record in the spring which included a 16-match winning streak. The streak included five wins during their spring break trip to California against Pomona-Pitzer, Caltech, Pacific (Ore.), UC Santa Cruz and Redlands. Tufts then went 9-1 in its New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) regular-season schedule and earned the #2 seed in the conference champoinship. They advanced to the NESCAC Championship Match for the second staight season.

The 2022 team then received the program's first NCAA Tournament berth since 2004 and won the NCAA Regional hosted by Johns Hopkins University with victories over Goucher College and North Carolina Wesleyan University. That advanced the team to its first-ever NCAA Quarterfinal in Orlando, where they defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to move on to the Final Four. There they lost a close mach 5-4 to eventual national champion University of Chicago.

Three Tufts players went on to compete at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, with Gorelik advancing to the national semifinals before losing.

The Jumbos finished the year ranked #4 nationally as a team and second in the Northeast Region. In the final singles national rankings, Gorelik was third and Rishabh Sharda was 17th. For doubles, Josh Belandres and Sharda earned the #15 national ranking.

Gregor was named NESCAC Coach of the Year for 2022, and four Jumbos - Belandres, Gorelik, Sharda and Vuk Vuksanovic - earned All-Conference recognition. Nine team members earned NESCAC All-Academic honors for carrying grade point averages of 3.50 or better.

As Regional Coach of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year, Gregor and White are now on the ballot for the national awards which will be announced on June 15.
