Wurcel’s NLP research identifies a difficult-to-uncover population—people who use drugs—and demonstrates the limitations of traditional electronic medical record searches. Her work reveals how NLP can serve as a more effective, efficient, and ethical alternative to chart reviews. By incorporating NLP in her research, Wurcel not only identifies patients more accurately but creates the opportunity to improve care through earlier identification of at-risk populations in need of better access to care and services.
