Tufts Mock Class: What Is a Bit?

Led by Noah Mendelsohn, Professor of Computer Science at Tufts. Many people know that computers "have lots of bits", but what is a bit? The answer leads us to information theory, one of the most beautiful and philosophically important developments of the 20th century. Deep understanding of bits and information storage is fundamental to understanding how computers can process not just numbers, but words, pictures, music etc. The material covered is essential for any good computer programmer, and is also useful and interesting to a wide range of audiences (no technical or math background required).
