In this talk, Andrew Letizia will describe the unique global health research niche of the U.S. DoD overseas laboratories; discuss examples of specific DoD emerging infectious disease surveillance and product development studies; and explain the key role of the DoD in informing public health mitigation strategies. Speaker: Captain Andrew Letizia, MD, MTM&H, FIDSA, is a practicing U.S. Navy infectious disease physician, a professor at the Uniformed Services University, and faculty at The National University of Singapore and Wake Forest University. Since 2021, he has served as the science director for the Naval Medical Research Unit Indo-Pacific, where he leads a team conducting over $9 million of research annually in 11 countries. He served as the officer in charge for the Naval Medical Research Unit-3’s Ghana detachment from 2016–2019 and as the deputy director for the infectious disease directorate at the Naval Medical Research Center from 2019–2021. Letizia has over 100 peer-reviewed articles. He is a recipient of the Department of Defense’s Military Health System’s Award for Outstanding Research Accomplishment and the Navy’s Dr. Delores M. Etter Top Scientist Award. His military honors include a Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, a Joint Achievement Medical, and a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
