Specifically, Professor Lung-Amam will discuss her findings in her recent book The Right to Suburbia: Combating Gentrification on the Urban Edge, which investigates how marginalized communities in suburban Washington, DC have battled patterns of uneven, racialized development. The goal of the discussion will be to highlight how suburban residents have fought for the ”right to suburbia”, which refers to residents’ right to remain in their communities and benefit from urban investment. On campus, this talk will encourage student populations to reflect on the impact of suburban gentrification on marginalized communities. Through this discussion, this event will engage audiences in new research that discusses current movements for social justice in the urban context, with a particular focus on marginalized communities’ agency.

With easy-to-use mapping tools, classes such as literature; history; film and media; and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies are visualizing archives, telling spatial stories, creating engaging exhibits, contributing to crowdsourced projects, and developing geospatial datasets. This workshop will discuss the essentials of developing mapping assignments for humanities classrooms—from bite-size to final project. We will look at examples of mapping projects and break them down to understand the tools, skills, elements, and steps to mapping with your students. About the Film From Signe Baumane, director of Rocks in My Pockets, comes a new award-winning animated feature about a spirited young woman determined to find love in the bewildering world. My Love Affair With Marriage follows Zelma on her 23-year quest for perfect love and lasting marriage set against a backdrop of historic events in Eastern Europe. ​ Told from a woman’s point of view, the film blends historical, biological, societal, and emotional arcs with a lively sense of humor and musical numbers. This animated film for adults tackles the issues of love, gender norms, domestic violence, fantasies and toxic relationships to propel a woman's journey toward independence and liberation. About the Filmmaker Signe Baumane is a Latvian born, Brooklyn-based independent filmmaker, artist, writer, and animator. She has made 17 award-winning animated shorts. Her first animated feature Rocks In My Pockets premiered at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 2014 where it received a FIPRESCI Prize. The film went on to over 130 international festivals. It opened theatrically in the U.S. through Zeitgeist Films.  Signe is a Guggenheim Fellow and a Fellow in Film for New York Foundation for the Arts. The qawwals move effortlessly between and among several languages and traditions across centuries, allowing for a fascinating inventiveness, rich in poetic and spiritual symbolism.
