Julian Chow will be leading a discussion on "An autonomously swimming biohybrid fish designed with human cardiac biophysics," Science, 2022 (DOI: 10.1126/science.abh0474). Come join the discussion and enjoy catering from Dave's Fresh Pasta! Abstract: Biohybrid systems have been developed to better understand the design principles and coordination mechanisms of biological systems. We consider whether two functional regulatory features of the heart—mechanoelectrical signaling and automaticity—could be transferred to a synthetic analog of another fluid transport system: a swimming fish. By leveraging cardiac mechanoelectrical signaling, we recreated reciprocal contraction and relaxation in a muscular bilayer construct where each contraction occurs automatically as a response to the stretching of an antagonistic muscle pair. Further, to entrain this closed-loop actuation cycle, we engineered an electrically autonomous pacing node, which enhanced spontaneous contraction. The biohybrid fish equipped with intrinsic control strategies demonstrated self-sustained body–caudal fin swimming, highlighting the role of feedback mechanisms in muscular pumps such as the heart and muscles. Meet chef, foraging TikTok star and outdoor educator Alexis Nikole Nelson, better known as the "Black Forager" on social media! With over 5 million followers joining her viral adventures of foraging and cooking, Nelson reframes the worlds of food, botany and nature, helping people make environmentally sustainable food choices while also celebrating the outdoors and changing fraught relationships with food. Nelson's videos shine a light on the historical and cultural roots of foraging in African American and Indigenous food traditions that have traditionally been repressed. Nelson's work has been featured in places like the New York Times, Bon Appetit, NPR, the Kelly Clarkson Show, and Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and she hosted a 15-episode series on botany for YouTube's educational channel, Crash Course. Nelson received the James Beard Award for “Best Social Media” in 2022, and she was selected for Forbes 30 Under 30, 2025 TIME100 Creators and as a TikTok Tastemaker. Registration required. All are welcome.

The Panel will be hosted on Wednesday, October 29, at 7 PM. It's going to be a discussion about the intersection of law, activism, politics, and the state of freedom of expression in a world where it's increasingly being challenged, and we will be hosting three really interesting speakers. One, Harvey Silverglate, is a lawyer, writer, and activist with a long history of protecting freedom of speech, including defending university students during anti-war demonstrations at Harvard. He's also the co-founder of FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights in Education). Professor Anjuli Fahlberg is a Latin America regional expert who works in the department of sociology and has done crucial research into social movements and activism under repression in the Americas. Professor David Art teaches comparative politics and brings an expert perspective on the behavior of extremist right-wing and populist parties and authoritarianism. There will be food provided.
