The Tufts EWB Greenhouse opened on May 4th, 2024, so we would love to celebrate a year of producing and donating fresh vegetables to the Somerville Homeless Coalition (SHC) food pantry! We’re hoping to continue supporting the SHC with a fundraiser on April 25th, and their mission of providing the homeless community with individualized supportive services and long-term affordable housing solutions. The Somerville Homeless Coalition was created by the community’s grassroots response to the social crisis of homelessness in 1985. As a community-based engineering group aimed to help our local community in any way that we can, Tufts EWB has dedicated the year to not only implementing rodent prevention shelving in the SHC food pantry, but also maintaining the greenhouse, adding new features to the greenhouse, including an automated hydroponics and water distribution system, as well as a data collection system. We have also been hosting educational events with the local elementary school, Elliot-Pearson, to teach them about sustainability and engineering through our greenhouse. For students and parents from Elliot-Pearson, we would love to have you all there to give the students hands-on experiences with the greenhouse. Consider coming to our anniversary fundraising event on April 25th, 3pm at 81 Powder House Blvd (see the poster for more details), where we will be hosting the following activities: Arts and Crafts Engineering Games Raffle Cookies Learn about NEW engineering Projects such as our Hydroponic system! Everyone is welcome! We hope to have kids, parents, students, EWB members, etc! Please try to pop in, even if it’s just for a little bit!
