From his role in the 1972 Nixon-Kissinger negotiations with Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai to his tenure as American Ambassador to Beijing and Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs in Washington D.C., Lord has been instrumental in shaping China policy.
